The referendum

Dateline: 23 June 2016

The referendum result was 52% to leave the EU and 48% to continue with it.

The then Prime Minister, David Cameron called the referendum to settle the matter as about 70 of his MPs and the UKiP party threatened Conservative power, his calculation and support of remaining in the EU backfired, and probably more in protest at him and what he represented than any actual plan, Britain narrowly voted to leave the EU.

The PM resigned.
